This could be a simple problem, but it could also be quite complex. More details will definitely be needed.

Is the drive letter and icon unavailable within My Computer?

If you go to an MS-DOS Prompt, and try to change to the CD-ROM drive letter, will it let you?

First thing I would check if the first condition is applicable, is go to your control panel, open the System Properties panel, and check the Performance tab. Does it mention anything about compatibility issues? Or does it say "Your System is Configured for Optimal Performance."

This will be a good place to start. It could be the device driver for the CD-ROM is missing or corrupt. A physical connection might also have come loose. (You should check for this first).

Good luck,

Rich
