Strange.

I would definitely check the Device Manager and Performance tab of the System Properties then. The Device Manager should list a CD-ROM at the top of the list. And the Performance tab should let you know if the drivers that you do have installed are possibly causing problems with Windows 9x. Some registry editing might be necessary as a worse case scenario. That would pop up if the Hard disk controller drivers are screwed up or corrupted.
