Blue Crab, here's my $.02. NATO was conceived as a defensive organization. I don't like to see it retooled as an implementer of policy. Sure, the Russians are a tad indigent right now. But it's their backyard, and we got quite prickly when our backyard was messed with. The Rooskies do have a seat in the Security Council, and it would have made the "moral imperative" of this latest set of hardware field tests so much better to have UN signoff on the NATO action. We didn't wait for the rest of the UN to weigh in. We just went ahead and proclaimed "national interest" under a NATO banner. Bad juju.
