Geez! Does the stock go down and stay down? Or does it eventually have to come back up for these investors to make riches?

The holders of the floorless convertibles are able to sell short the normal shares of the company, and are covered by the future conversion of their convertibles. By selling short, they've immediately put money in the bank. They do not need to wait for the price to rise. In fact, if the price rises, while their short position is still open, then they may in fact lose money. So, once they start shorting, they have all the incentive in the world to continue shorting to drive the price down further.
