This could also be caused by where the CD Rom is on the IDE cable and what other devices are on the cable. Someone said they lost their CD-Rom after installing a new hard drive. If this could be the case try moving things around on the cables. I know for instance that my CD-Rom wouldn't be recognized if I tried to have a primary hard drive on the same cable. My CD-Rom has to be in the primary position.
