How does the "no margin" work when you are already on margin for another stock? Isn't your margin pooled for all securities in your account (sorry if this sounds ignorant but you can see I don't trade on margin)? Also, if you are not on margin, do you have to continue to have cash to cover if the stock you shorted continues to move up? If so it would seem you would get a quick margin call in that circumstance, making shorting impractical for anyone who does not want to leave a substantial cash balance sitting unproductively in one's account.
