The Morning Call of Allentown to Install Unisys Publishing Solutions
BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 1999--Unisys Corporation today announced a multimillion-dollar agreement with The Morning Call of Allentown, Pa. to install a suite of Unisys Publishing Solutions.
In addition to addressing Y2K issues, the solutions will help reduce production time and streamline editorial operations by integrating news, archival and wire services management functions.
Installation has already begun of the Hermes(tm) publishing system, WireCenter wire services management system and DocCenter multimedia archiving system on The Morning Call's 238 workstations - including 10 dedicated librarian seats. The workstations operate out of one central and four remote bureau locations to produce five daily editions and two editions on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Unisys solutions replace an existing SII editorial system and Vu/Text SAVE and T/ONE Merlin for text and photo archiving.
''The Unisys approach to meeting the demands of our newspaper was the unanimous choice of our cross-departmental systems search team,'' said Deputy Managing Editor Al Roberts, team co-leader from the Editorial Department. ''Our staff created a detailed requirements list and Unisys best fit those needs. The single-platform approach seems ideal to us.''
The Hermes and WireCenter systems will be supported by dual Sun E3500 servers with Windows NT clients while the DocCenter system will run on dual Sun E450 servers. Additional services include integration with SCS Layout 8000 Ad Dummy and The Morning Call's existing Web site.
''Unisys Publishing Solutions will take us into the new millennium with superior integration capabilities, a refined pagination process, and a smooth transition for our editorial staff,'' stated Pamela Marcks, the team's technical project leader. ''We chose the system that will help fulfill The Morning Call's mission to be the indispensable provider of news and information to our communities.''
The Morning Call becomes the second Times Mirror property to implement the Unisys Publishing Solutions, following the selection of Unisys by Newsday in 1998.
Unisys Publishing Solutions are currently used by over 100 newspapers in 13 countries including such U.S. papers as Stars and Stripes, Newsday, New York Daily News, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, San Francisco Examiner and The Colorado Springs Gazette. |
