Colombia oil pipeline crippled by bomb attack

BOGOTA, April 5 (Reuters) - A new bomb attack by suspected Marxist rebels has halted pumping operations along Colombia's Cano Limon-Covenas crude oil pipeline, state oil company Ecopetrol said Monday.

A company spokesman said the latest attack, the 28th this year, occurred at 10:22 a.m. (local/1522 GMT) Sunday in an area 216 miles (349 km) west of the Cano Limon field operated by Occidental Petroleum Corp. (NYSE:OXY - news).

At least 7,000 barrels of crude were spilled in the attack on the 230,000 barrel per day (bpd) capacity pipeline, the spokesman said.

He said repair work on the line, which reopened Thursday after another bomb attack last Wednesday, would hopefully be completed by sometime late Monday.

The pipeline serves the 140,000 bpd Cano Limon field.

It was not immediately clear which of Colombia's two leading leftist rebel groups was responsible for the latest attack on the oil pipeline. But guerrillas routinely target Colombia's energy infrastructure to protest against what they see as excessive involvement by foreign multinationals in the country's oil industry.
