Hey, perhaps this sentence needs some clarification:

All because someone stole his AOL user id and password.

No one "steals" this information in the sense that they "hack" into AOL's network and copy a file with names and user IDs. Generally people are unaware or not attentive and download software which are actuality trojan horse programs designed to capture your user ID and password then emails it back to the "hacker".

In other cases, members are emailed notes telling them they have WON a prize from AOL Rewards or something to that effect. The click the link and go to an "AOL look-alike" website where they fill out a form which again asks for their user ID and password. There are hundreds of variations of this type of "phishing".

We spend alot of time on AOL getting through to people that they should under NO CIRCUMSTANCES give out this information. AOL doesn't need to know it and they NEVER ask for it even if you call Customer Service (they ask for your real name and ZIP code for a look-up and then verify you once they have your info).

Poor Scott is a victim twice - once by the "hacker" who took his information, and second by his own ignorance.

Good thing we have digitalme coming soon - it will go a long way to eliminating both victimizations. How far it will protect us will only be known once there's a shipping product based on digitalme. Again, if digitalme can "cloak" the identity of the user, wouldn't that exasperate some of the problems we already have today in cyberspace?
