The way my friend did the partitioning, he first cleaned out the drive of a total win95 setup (1 partition), then fdisked with 2 partitions, the second being put in as Linux,

The above was a mistake if he actually did it this way as to make a DOS partition for Linux is a no-no. Just leave the area above the DOS partition as unused.

You can use Partition Magic to make some areas for Linux but you do not make them partitions you just make them unused areas. This is if you wish to shrink a DOS partition without losing data. If you are reparitiongin and don't care then use Linux fdisk for the task of creating the Linux partitions. Linux fdisk is the tool to run to make partitions for Linux. But never attempt to used Linux fdisk to remove a partition made by DOS fdisk.
