This is true but my point was that some of the functionality that
DM vendors have been charging premium dollars for is likely to be
commoditized by being made available on Windows 2000 or Oracle 8+,
for example. If this happens, although they are not complete applications, they will lower the entry barrier for people who
want to compete with Documentum (and others) in the application
space. Right? I guess I didn't communicate the point well :-)

I agree that the options granted now will be worth something in the
future. From what I have heard, Documentum has a 4 year vesting
period and the options vest equally over the period unlike Microsoft's, for example. What I was voicing was my concern about
top engineers who have been with the company for quite a while (i.e.
past their vesting period) and who've built most of the infrastructure
of their EDM server leaving since any post-IPO options are not
going to see the light of day for quite a while.

Actually yesterday I checked with a recruiter friend as well someone who left DCTM a few months ago about this. They tell me that senior engineers, particularly those working on their core EDM server,
have left in droves over the past year and has accelerated this
quarter.
