Real volume is about 33% of volume reported.
For each actual trade there are two reported. The seller selling to the market maker who puts it in his inventory then the buyer buying it from the market maker's inventory. Plus there are all the trades from one market maker's inventory to another market maker's inventory. These are usually the screw ball looking ones reported in 32nds and 64ths. Market makers don't screw each other. They take just a little.
