I would also like to add to EC's description of shutting down
that you can shut down without ever logging into root, by
typing "ctrl-alt-del" at the login prompt, or, more recently,
from the "shutdown" item at the login screen in KDM :-)

ObQuestion: Anyone ever get "IRQ DEADLOCK DETECTED BY CPU 0"? I
run an smp kernel for a 2*pII/400 system, and it's done it a
couple times exactly as I try to install a large collection of
RPMs... mangles the entire filesystem, it's really scary.
