My issue is not that the Melissa hacker got caught, but that he got caught with "tools" that anyone online can use, whether they are using them for good reasons or bad. Used in other ways it would easily allow a regular person's privacy to be invaded including abilty to trace all their identities through documents that end up in various places online.

I think we agree that vaults like DigitalMe are needed to reduce the chance of misuse of the same documents to cause mayhem in someone's personal life or even to promote blackmail. Then, the only way the vault could be opened is through appropriate use of search warrants as actually required by law to conduct an investigation.
