Unless it's a really ancient or proprietary CD-ROM, you should simply have to change the jumper setting on the CD-ROM to slave mode for it to work on the same channel as your primary IDE hard-drive. Most CD-ROM's have 3 jumper pin selections at the back of the drive. If you only have one IDE cable in your system and one hard drive, chances are that the CD-ROM is set in slave mode to your hard drive.

I prefer to have it on a separate cable myself and set it to Master as it increases it's throughput.
