Looking at the original BioAPI alliance . . .

The founders were Novell, IBM, Compaq, Identicator, and a couple of other, nonfingerprint biometric companies. From what I'm starting to pick up, it's beginning to look like a Novell-Compaq alliance in large part to help enable Novell's new "Digital Me," its cyber-identity keeper that's controlled by the end user. That system needs a good authentication protocol to work.

Novell is allied with Compaq and, apparently, also with IBM. Compaq brought on Identicator. The alliance also picked up a couple of other types of biometrics to round things out . . . and Novell will support several types of biometrics.

I like where this conspiracy theory is going.
