SKOKIE, Ill. -- U.S. Robotics Corp. (USRX) Monday shipped its x2 6Kbps technology after a delay in shipments to work on software for the new modem.

As reported in The Wall Street Journal on Feb. 19, U.S. Robotics delayed selling the new computer modem that allows data from the Internet to be transferred at as much as 56,000 bits per second, twice the rate of current popular modems.

The company planned to ship the new ''x2'' device to retailers last week. It was going to release software that would allow its modems sold since August to be updated to the faster receiving speed. But a spokewoman had said the company is still working on software for the new modem.

U.S. Robotics said in a press release Monday that the shipment to North American retailers will be followed by a demonstration of the European x2version at CeBIT in Hamburg, Germany, with distribution in European and Pacific Rim markets to follow.

The company said its x2 is a ''breakthrough'' in modem technology that provides Internet and on-line connections at speeds nearly twice as fast as the current 28.8 Kbps available over standard telephone lines.

The company said at speeds up to 56 Kbps, x2 Technology will allow users to download data at rates comparable with many Integrated Services Digital Network connections, but without the need for expensive new telephone central office equipment required by other high-speed technologies.

All U.S. Robotics x2 modems shipping are software upgradable. U.S. Robotics makes modems and enterprise-wide access products that connect computers and other equipment over analog and digital networks.
