Patriarch:

I hear you loud & clear. I also considered DirecPC earlier this year, in fact in December 1998, for that matter. I did my own research & did come across the FAP instituted by Hughes & the litigation instituted by subscribers who never agreed to have their bandwidth subjected to such policy. New subscribers must now assent to such regulation, for better or worse, depending on their planned level of bandwidth use.

I also had the opportunity to check out first-hand DirecPC access while at CES in Vegas in January. To say the least, I was not impressed. It was not has fast as some high-speed connections I had sample at airports & a 256Kbps DSL connection set up by USWest at a mall in Phoenix. There appeared to be a slight delay in the download.
Needless to say, I never purchased DirecPC, content to stick with my ISDN until DSL or cable arrives at my doorstep, hopefully within a year.

But the immediately preceding comment, is critical IMO, to the decision whether to forego purchase of DirecPC access or not. If you happen to live in a rural area with no likelihood of getting broadband in the foreseeable future, DirecPC does merit some consideration. If on the other hand, you happen to live within or near a major urban center, DirecPC may not necessarily be worth the investment -- if & only if that DSL or cable access actually gets delivered, which in reality could take years even if close to a major urban center. JMO.
