Part of the problem is that so much of the transfer of what we call "culture" takes place during the day with our young ones when Mommy is there to do it. I took the boys to museums and the Science Place and matinees, I oversaw the music lessons, and what time Dan had was usually spent coaching their sports in the evenings. You are in the enviable position of being able to spend more time with your children and play a bigger role in this part of their education. I don't think one necessarily has to know that much, just attempt to see everything with enthusiasm and curiosity, with a child's eyes, as unprejudiced and nonjudgmental as possible, teaching them to love the process of learning. And of course what fork to use, and what kind of shoes to wear.
