I agree DF. For all I know, it's a fake. People in Qualcomm say that the web page displaying Globalstar handsets from Qualcomm is correct and the current model. The one displayed by the on-line merchant is different.

Q!
qualcomm.com

The merchant:
satellitephones.net

But Globalstar displays one like the merchant:
globalstar.com

There is a fourth one too, without the small terrestrial antenna being evident, presumably because it is inside the handset. That one isn't on the Web yet.

So we have a few different stories on the go. I guess that Qualcomm Web page is the one out of date or maybe those are the models they've been producing until now, but they are going to start production of the other one, with or without the little terrestrial antenna, sometime in August.

This is good fun but not a particularly well organized marketing strategy. Then there are the Ericsson and Telital handsets too but let's leave them for now.

Globalstar Web site makes no attempt to sell the handsets. No order forms. No detailed information. Neither does the Qualcomm web site.

This is on the eve of the 21st century and with multibillion dollar business at stake and with a high technology item which is of high value and will be sold to a niche market, not a mass market, and the Web is the place to make such sales. People who buy Globalstar handsets will nearly all be Web users [see earlier market research bearing out the correlation between cellphone users and internet users.]

I'm not sending money to the merchant until some information from Qualcomm or Globalstar is available on what is true.

DF, I always said Iridium shouldn't launch their satellites but I thought they would at least cover their costs plus a bit maybe. Now I'm not so sure.

If ICO goes ahead with their government/taxpayer funded multibillion dollar shambles, Iridium World can kiss their equity goodbye. I'll be around to eat my words! Unforeseen events and force majeure excluded. The ICO minutes will drive down Globalstar minute prices too. Yes, yes, I know there is all the fancy market segmentation targeting focus with price points and positioning, but I bet they are mostly fungible.

Let's see ICO hurry up and make some decisions. With luck, the financiers will make the decision for them by offering a bargain interest rate of 50%. Though how they'll pay the interest beats me.
