NetZero comments

I also noticed that news.com article this afternoon so in the interest of due diligence I downloaded a copy of NetZero to check it out (add me to the 'inactive' user count!)

The advertising is incredibly irritating and obtrusive and there is no way I would ever use NetZero as my primary ISP. I see two uses for it, however, which should prove popular.

First, as a cheap backup for those occasions when your primary (or secondary) ISP is down. Can't argue with free and it costs nothing more than a few megabytes of diskspace to have it available for "insurance" purposes.

Second, for the "occasional traveller" notebook user. Given that they have a national presence, if I have a notebook computer but don't travel outside of my primary ISP's service area often enough to justify having a national account, it would be convenient to have NetZero as a cheap way to check e-mail and do light surfing on those occasions when I'm away from home.

So a NetZero account plus a small piece of cardboard to tape over the commandeered corner of one's screen would seem to have a role to play. They'll probably even show revenue growth until their advertisers figure out the cardboard trick.
