Content to Wait and Waiting for Content

While broadband technologies continue to evolve, at what appears to be light-speed, xDSL and cable modems have been touted as valid solutions for broadband access. The sluggish deployment of these solutions may reflect the future of these technologies. With the arrival of Ka-Band satellite, LDMS and all-optical technologies just around the corner, xDSL and the cable modem will not be able to compete.

xDSL is plagued by the enormous cost for the carrier relating to its deployment. The carriers are not likely to make such an investment in equipment for a technology that reached its design limits. Cable modems, while being cheaper to deploy, are crippled by its inability to scale, a design flaw that will invalidate any benefits gained from the lower implementation cost.

Long-term viability is the key to success in this dynamic market, and each region of the globe has its own unique characteristics to consider. I do not see either xDSL or cable modems as the solution we have all been waiting for. While the DirecPC may currently appear, "not ready for primetime", its potential to provide scalable uniform global access, make it a viable solution, worth waiting for.
