Metricom is way ahead of everyone else right now. However, there is a CDMA based wireless data system in the works. Its probably at least a year away. It will likely roll out faster than Metricom can since they use existing cell towers to make their network, but they will probably charge by the minute or by the byte as these telecom people really don't get it. Also, it may be faster than Ricochet2, but if it is, it will definately cost a lot more. However, if its 128k or less, it might be flat rate and "fast enough" and be rolled out a lot quicker than metricom. (Plus, remember my earlier comments about the asymetrical nature of internet data as well a the fact that cell towers have limited bandwidth and lack the ability to dynamically allocate it effectively.)

But Metricom fits well in Paul Allen's total plan and is a key component. Plus everyone knows that ubiquitous wireless data is going to be a significant subscriber base in the next 10 years... and metricom has the right technology.
