Pepsi( Pepsico Inc )sees 98 profit for int'l beverages-WSJ

NEW YORK, Feb 24 (Reuter) - The chief executive of Pepsico Inc beverage operations believes the company's international business will "return to significant profitability" in 1998, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Craig Weatherup told a group of consumer analysts in Florida that the company would curtail its international growth and take a more deliberate policy, the report said.

Earlier this month Pepsi said it expects its international beverage business to report an operating loss of about $25 million to $50 million in 1997.

Weatherup said that still holds true, but that PepsiCo Chairman and Chief Executive has asked for a $50 million improvement in operating profit in 1998.

"I guarantee you, we'll do one heck of a lot better than that," the report quoted him as saying.
