A VERY MINOR disagreement here. Ike incurred PLENTY of wrath, just never wrath of someone above himself on the pecking order. From 1943-45 the American SHAEF folks hated him, from D-Day until EOH Monty's staff hated him. Ike knew when to duck and when to roar, two very important things for a POTUS to know. He also knew how to portray himself; had Nixon absorbed one scintilla of that knowledge, we would be treating Nixon as we now treat Reagan. Sure would love to have seen that reversal.
