Great answer Rich!
The 3 settings for IDE drives are Primary(PR)(or master), Slave(SL) and Cable Select(CS). Most newer machines have 2 IDE channels each which can support 2 drives. With 1 hard drive and 1 cd the best performance is with the HD as master on IDE #1 and the CD as master on IDE #2.

When you add more drives, it gets a little trickier. Logically one would assume that the Primary/Slave settings would be enough, but if the drives are from different makers the second drive on a channel sometimes needs to be set to CS rather than Slave.
