Regarding voice delay, Dragonfly says:
"inmarsat has far too of a delay to be usable for TV news. Do you know how long it takes a signal to get to the clarke belt and back?"

Iridium system has a similar voice delay. The delay is there for a different reason, but it is there nonetheless. To measure the delay, I placed a call from an Iridium phone to an outdoor (wired) telephone, then put the phones to both ears and spoke. I was quite surprised. This was not a well calibrated test. I didn't use any equipment to measure the delay, except for my ear, and my ability to count. I believe the delay was > 500ms.

I am not privy to enough information about Iridium to know why the delay would be so large. We all know the time it takes the signal to travel to the satellites and back, because the speed of light is public information. We know that's not it. I am guessing that system design decisions such as choice a long TDMA frame size may be involved, but this is complete speculation. Perhaps someone who knows more about the system will comment.

Also, if someone has measured the voice delay in a more scientific fashion, I'd be interested to hear the result.
