Compaq Offers Cheaper Storage Alternative

Compaq Computer Corp., Houston, said it is offering two networked computer-storage products that provide a cheaper alternative to adding disk storage to individual computers. Its first Storage Area Network products allow information to be stored as far as 6.2 miles away from an attached computer. High-speed connections enable the information to appear as local to individual computers yet can be managed centrally by a computer department. The products are priced from $105,000 for a device with eight computer connections and 400 gigabytes of disk storage to $738,000 for a system linking 16 computers and containing 5,000 gigabytes of disk storage. Compaq's networked storage devices, called the Raid Array 8000 and Enterprise Storage Array 12000, compete against offerings from EMC Corp., Dell Computer Corp. and Data General Corp.
