There is more concentration of power now in terms of media ownership and control than there ever has been. Just because the 30 million
is split up over 8 Time-Warner media channels is immaterial. If
online culture has liberated us from the "limited choice" of the
past, then why isn't there more political change being driven from
the grassroots? Just because I can post on SI does not mean that I
have more impact as a citizen than I did 30 years ago. In fact,
spending time here or elsewhere on the Web may just be a substitute
for more useful activity. Today, we are less able to escape from
media in one form or another. Is this necessarily a good thing?
