Technology Briefs Intel to Cut Microprocessor Prices
Intel Corp., Santa Clara, Calif., is expected to cut prices on its microprocessors by as much as 17% on April 11, analysts said. Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Piper Jaffray Inc. in Minneapolis, said Intel is expected to cut its low-end Celeron chips by 11% to 15.5%, its midrange Pentium II chips by 13% to 17% and its high-end Pentium III chips by 8% to 17%. Intel officials declined to comment on the upcoming cuts. Intel rose $6.625, or 5.5%, to $127.50 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Meanwhile, rival chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Monday said it has begun selling a 475-megahertz version of its K6-2 chip. Among the customers are International Business Machines Corp., which plans to use the chip in an upcoming consumer model. A spokesman for AMD said the company would match Intel's price cuts.
