HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1999--

Introduces Linux/Tru64 UNIX Compatibility and Easy Clustering;
Debuts Compaq AlphaServer ES40, Industry's Fastest 4-Way Server

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced its
strategy to bring higher availability to the enterprise UNIX market at
the best and widest range of price points compared to anyone else in
the industry. Building on its successful volume business, Compaq
offers Tru64 UNIX on AlphaServers as its scalable, robust enterprise
platform and will establish Alpha systems as the high performance
leaders for Linux operating systems. Included in today's announcement
are: new releases of Tru64 UNIX and TruCluster software that feature
breakthrough easy-to-use UNIX clustering; the industry's fastest 4-way
RISC server the new Compaq AlphaServer ES40; and Compaq's intention to
deliver Linux/Tru64 UNIX application and product compatibility.
"Compaq is committed to winning in the enterprise UNIX market
with Tru64 UNIX and high performance AlphaServers," said John T. Rose,
Senior Vice President and General Manager, Compaq's Enterprise
Computing Group. "With our technically superior Tru64 UNIX in
combination with Linux, we're going for a leadership position through
a strategy of focus and execution."
Compaq is the volume leader in the world of servers running SCO
software, and for those customers investing in OpenServer, UnixWare,
and who want shrink-wrapped channel-ready solutions, Compaq's
relationship with SCO will continue to meet these business needs.
Compaq will also continue to market and develop the Integrity UNIX
product line as part of its "Carrier-Grade" telecommunications
business strategy, and continue to support Non-Stop Clusters for SCO
UNIX as its clustering solution for IA32 platforms.
The combination of Tru64 UNIX and Alpha 21264-powered servers
gives customers true "enterprise" power, with affordable UNIX
solutions for unprecedented levels of scalability and application
availability - running on the fastest servers in the world. The
company will deliver Tru64 UNIX on AlphaServers in key target markets
such as the Internet, Telecommunications, Business Intelligence,
Business Applications, and High Performance Technical Computing.
As Marshall Peterson, Director of Technology and Infrastructure,
Celera Genomics, said: "High performance computing is fundamental to
Celera's strategy. We are building the most powerful bioinformatics
computing facility in the world to offer customers the most complete
genomics data at the earliest date with the fastest access. Compaq
AlphaServer ES40s running Tru64 UNIX will be the building blocks in
delivering this capability. Their computational performance and 64-bit
Very Large Memory architecture play a key role in our plan to map the
human genome."

Compaq AlphaServer ES40 - World's Fastest 4-Way RISC Server

The mid-range Compaq AlphaServer ES40 announced today is the
latest in a new generation of AlphaServers, complementing the recently
introduced Compaq AlphaServer GS Series (with up to 14 processors) and
Compaq AlphaServer DS Series (with one or two processors). Powered by
the Alpha 21264 CPU (EV6), the Compaq AlphaServer ES40 is the fastest
4-way RISC server available, offering unprecedented 64-bit performance
at nearly half the price of the previous generation, and is available
for a choice of operating systems: Tru64 UNIX, OpenVMS, Windows NT or
Linux.
The Compaq AlphaServer ES40 is engineered to meet the needs of
growing businesses running Internet, database/business intelligence,
business and high-performance technical applications. It supports up
to four 500MHz Alpha 21264 processors and can retrieve data from up to
16 GB of error-correcting memory three times faster than the
competition using a new crossbar switch technology. The new switch
uses two very wide (256-bit) paths that can send data between memory
and the processors at up to 5.2GB/sec. For demanding applications
across a range of markets, the Compaq AlphaServer ES40 provides
customers with the most robust, quad processor UNIX server available
today.
For example, the Compaq AlphaServer ES40 delivers the greatest
integer compute power (27.3 SPECint95) - more than 59 percent faster
than the Sun E450 (17.4 SPECint95) and HP K580 (17.4 SPECint95). In
automobile crash simulation and impact analysis, the AlphaServer ES40
is two times faster than the HP V2250 and SGI Origin
(http://www.marc.com/). In aerodynamic stress testing and airflow, the
AlphaServer ES40 is faster than all quad processor servers, and is
even faster than the 8-processor Sun E6000, 16-processor HP2250, and
8-processor SGI Origin 2000 (http://www.wpi.edu/~roadsafe/bench.html).
The Compaq AlphaServer ES40 scales up to more than 1 TB of
internal storage and has I/O expansion for up to 10 high-performance
(64-bit) PCI bus slots. The new server also provides built-in system
management capabilities; hot-swap drives; space-efficient tower,
pedestal or rack configurations; and high-availability from redundant
power supplies and fans to complement Compaq Tru64 UNIX TruCluster
Server software.

Compaq's TruCluster Server V5.0: UNIX Clustering Made Easy

Compaq's TruCluster Server V5.0 makes clustering easy for all
enterprise customers. TruCluster Server V5.0 delivers "uniform shared
root" cluster solutions for high availability and unmatched
scalability without the complexity and technical compromises inherent
in competitive offerings. Now, the cluster is the system, providing
dramatically easier and more affordable management and installation
for any business requiring enterprise-level horsepower and high
availability.
Joyce Becknell, Director of UNIX Marketing at Aberdeen, said:
"Until today, the barriers to clustering have been the complexity of
configuring, managing and optimizing systems. For customers whose high
availability systems demand the ultimate in performance and
scalability, Compaq TruCluster Server and Tru64 UNIX provide premier
clustering solutions featuring some of the best tools available to
system managers. The latest product enhancements demonstrate Compaq's
commitment to offering state of the art technology in easy to use,
price-conscious packages."
TruCluster Server V5.0 delivers the UNIX industry's first uniform
shared root cluster file system. Complex tasks such as installing
applications, executing file-based management operations or adding
disks are done only once across the entire cluster. This feature
simplifies cluster management by providing a single system view of the
entire cluster and lowers the total cost of operations. As in all UNIX
clusters, if one system goes down another automatically takes over
with no data loss. With its uniform shared root, TruCluster Server

Compaq's Tru64 UNIX V5.0: Leading Mainframe-like System Management

Six years of customer-tested, real-world production experience
has made Compaq Tru64 UNIX the industry leader in 64-bit UNIX
installations and application availability. Tru64 UNIX V5.0 features
support for both system and application partitioning. System
partitioning allows multiple instances of the operating system to run
on the same hardware. This helps users retain and extend the
investment in their hardware and current applications and enable
customers to consolidate many dedicated-application servers into
fewer, more powerful multipurpose servers.
In addition, Tru64 UNIX is the first UNIX system to deliver
integrated application partitioning enabling multiple applications to
run within separate workload partitions under a single copy of the
operating system. System management with Tru64 UNIX has been vastly
simplified to reduce operator error and training requirements. The
unique Event Manager monitors, evaluates, and helps administrators
streamline system management. The newest version of Tru64 UNIX also
features dynamic tuning, which allows operators to allocate resources
without halting system activities, and Web-based, Java enabled system
management from any system, PC or server on the network.
"We are pleased to announce the release of Oracle8i for Compaq
Tru64 UNIX as the first available 64-bit version of Oracle8i," said
Michael Rocha, Senior Vice President, Oracle Corporation. "New
features in Tru64 UNIX V5.0 demonstrate that Compaq provides not only
the performance advantages of 64-bit computing but superior
manageability, availability and scalability to support Oracle8i for
mission critical database applications on the Internet."
"Compaq Tru64 UNIX has always been the first operating system
supported by Oracle's 64-bit database releases. And once again, we are
pleased to announce that Oracle8i for Compaq Tru64 UNIX was recently
released as the first available 64-bit version of Oracle8i," said Gary
Bloom, Senior Vice President, Oracle Corporation. "Exclusive new
features in Tru64 UNIX V5.0 such as the Cluster File System
demonstrate that Compaq provides not only the performance advantages
of 64-bit computing, but superior manageability, availability and
scalability to support Oracle8i for mission critical database
applications on the Internet."

Linux and Tru64 UNIX Compatibility; Compaq Support

Compaq has now incorporated Linux into its enterprise UNIX
strategy, emphasizing its intentions to increase Linux and Tru64 UNIX
application and product compatibility. This will ensure a more
consistent, complete application platform for Linux customers. Compaq
will concentrate on Internet Service Providers (ISPs), High
Performance Technical Computing (HPTC) and Education as initial Linux
target markets.
Further establishing AlphaServers as the high performance leader
in Linux systems, and in direct response to demand from High
Performance Technical Computing customers, Compaq is also porting its
Tru64 UNIX Alpha Fortan and C compilers along with the associated
runtime libraries to Linux (Alpha) later this year. Additional
compilers/development tools will be considered as more requirements
are identified. Early testing has shown that the code generated by
Compaq Fortran for Linux on AlphaServers will perform floating point
calculations at least twice as fast as code generated by the g77
compiler for Linux on AlphaServers.
Within the next 90 days, Compaq Services will introduce customer
support services for the Linux operating system running on Compaq's
Alpha- and Intel-based servers. These services will focus initially on
call center support. Compaq will help customers take advantage of
Linux open source code development and other available resources, and
will assist customers in obtaining code updates to the Linux operating
system. These services will be introduced first in North America and
subsequently in other geographies.
Compaq Services is committed to incorporating Linux into its
comprehensive services portfolio to meet customers' needs. For that
purpose and within the next 90 days, Compaq Services will start
offering support services for customers running the Linux operating
system on Compaq's AlphaServers and ProLiant servers. The initial set
of services will complement Compaq's existing portfolio of lifecycle
services for Tru64 UNIX.

Pricing and Availability

The Compaq AlphaServer is available in May with prices starting
under $23,900 with one 500MHz Alpha 21264 CPU, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB disk,
