China may have a population of one billion - but the middle class is about 100-200 million right now, depending on the definition of the word. 40 million out of that is a pretty good chunk. Chinese economic growth is expanding the middle class every year - but this is still a developing country. The standard that locks up the existing base of relatively affluent consumers has a huge advantage. I have contacts to both MII employees and people affiliated with MII in three Chinese cities. That 40 million GSM subs in China by end of 1999 is a projection made by an independent market research firm and backed up by Chinese estimates.

I don't expect anyone to accept this at face value - I suggest we wait for the end of 1999 and see what happens. In my opinion 90% market share for GSM by 2005 is a total victory. What's your definition? Why don't you make an estimate for GSM and CDMA subscriber bases by the ends of 1999 and 2000? Come on - tell me that GSM won't hit 40 million by this year's end. Tell met that CDMA will grow explosively. That would be constructive - and it would expose you to the danger of getting it totally wrong. That's a bit tougher than merely criticizing other people, isn't it?
