> What do dividends have to do with earnings?

The better the earnings, the better the dividend. Or have you forgotten in your tulip-mania what owning a share of a company means?

It means you are entitled to a percentage of its profits, or a percentage of its "sold" price. That's what investing is.

When companies dont pay dividends, which is the norm for NASDAQ companies, you have only 2 ways of making a profit- if the company is sold, or if a greater fool buys your share.

>Even Warren Buffett doesn't like dividends.

Warren Buffett also believes stock splits are designed with one purpose- to mask equity inflation and sucker investors.
