SYNERGY BRANDS, INC. (SYBR)

Our featured short-term pick this week is Synergy Brands, Inc. (SYBR).
Synergy Brands is a distributor of groceries, general household
merchandise, health and beauty aids and premium handmade cigars and
related tobacco products. For the nine months ended 9/30/98, revenues
rose from 3.9M to 7.9M due to increased sales to primary suppliers and
Proctor Gamble. Net income from operations rose to 517K from 133K due to
decreased expenses. Synergy Brands offers health and beauty aid products
through its website BeautyBuys.com. In addition to selling professional
hair care products and designer fragrances and cosmetics, BeautyBuys.com
will be expanded to include a separate “drugstore” category offering a
wider variety of over-the-counter drugstore products. The expansion of
the website is due to the overwhelming response that it has received since
its opening on Feb.26 of this year. Synergy Brands has online marketing
agreements with Lycos, theglobe.com and TheWomen.com Network. In
addition, the company has scheduled television commercials to promote its
website to run on the leading women's television network, Lifetime
Television for Women. The commercials are being produced by Cat &
Crossbones Productions, Inc., a New York based production company that has
made commercials for Coke, Sony, Sprint and MTV. Synergy Brands is also
in the developmental phase of its second website NetCigar.com which will
launch shortly. An interesting note: There have been rumors of a possible
takeover of Synergy Brands by Ivillage.com (IVIL), an internet site
designed specifically for women. SYBR would be a nice match for IVIL
because their website is geared mostly towards women.
