Mike: Re probable 3rd gen phone configuration, your understanding is wrong. Sorry about that. Almost but not quite. The least likely is a phone with all three modes.

TDMA will go its own way probably with some combination with GSM where possible and practical.

No one is likely to bother with a TDMA combination with CDMA - no point in that.

There will be CDMA only. GSM only. A combination of both with Globalstar satellite. CDMAOne (IS-95) of various upgrades combined with CDMA2000. CDMA and old fashioned cellular. And on and on.

AT&T will push a combination TDDA and GSM phone (a world phone) so called. :-) The dying technologiies combined. What fun. But AT&T's huge marketing clout make this a force to be contended with in the US - but in the US only.

I have only scratched the surface here, and as you well know, I ain't a tech wiz.

Suggest you raise this on the SI Q thread where such tech wiz's abound.

Best personal regards.

Chaz too

PS But all this is guessing at this point.

The "standards" are in process of real world discussion in London right now with Vodaphone/Airtouch taking the lead and the service providers pushing for convergence.

Phone configuration will depend on outcome.

But again, 3 mode combination least likely phone box.
