I'm not concerned about "best," I'm thinking "adequate." If I have to add an Ethernet card, 16 Megs of memory (and perhaps swap motherboards to one that will even hold the 16 Megs), the new Sun card, and a new video card and monitor to the old machine to make it into an adequate NC, the better alternative might be a new Javastation. Remember, up-front costs of the machine are not where the bulk of the savings are, anyway.
