AHAA - the GaAs rival of ANAD...

BusinessWire, Monday, April 05, 1999 at 18:52

WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 1999--Alpha Industries
announced today that it has received multiple design wins and
increased production orders from Motorola for gallium arsenide (GaAs)
integrated circuits and semiconductors to be used in multiple versions
of the new CDMA digital StarTAC(TM) phone. The CDMA StarTAC is the
most popular new digital wireless telephone handset introduced by
Motorola within the last few months, with versions aimed at major
markets, including the United States and China.
"Growth in the market for GaAs control ICs is extremely strong,
as new handsets become more complex. We are expanding our market share
in high-efficiency GaAs ICs, which let new multi-mode, multi-band
handsets change instantly and seamlessly between frequencies and
operating standards," said David Fryklund, Alpha's Business Unit
Director for RF IC Products.
"Alpha has more GaAs control devices in these CDMA StarTac
platforms than we have ever had in any other phone. The new generation
of multi-band, multi-mode wireless handsets need two to three times as
many control products as older phones, and our strong position in the
GaAs control IC market allows us to grow sales of these products
faster than the growth of the overall market.
"Alpha has product in virtually every new Motorola digital
handset platform. We are working closely with Motorola on its next
generation of wireless phones, which will add Internet access and even
more convenient size and features."
Alpha Industries designs and manufactures a broad range of
products for microwave and radio frequency wireless communications
applications. The Wireless Semiconductor segment provides gallium
arsenide (GaAs) integrated circuits and other semiconductors to the
dynamic global market for wireless telephone handsets. The Application
Specific Products (ASP) segment provides a broad range of GaAs and
silicon devices to satellite, instrumentation, defense and other
communications markets. The Ceramic Products segment provides
technical ceramic products for wireless telephony infrastructure and
other wireless markets. Additional information is available at Alpha's
