Financial Times (02/24/97) P. 4; Nakamoto, Michiyo -- A Japanese government panel is expected to advise the nation's
ministry of posts and telecommunications to accept the U.S. technology CDMA as the country's standard for advanced mobile
communications. The decision will be a major setback for the European standard GSM, and it will decrease the likelihood that
the International Telecommunications Union will select GSM as a global standard. A Japanese official says, "Whichever standard
Japan goes for is likely to be the world standard." Japanese industry and government officials say CDMA was chosen because it
can provide more capacity and services than GSM. Two Japanese cellular carriers--IDO and NTT Docomo--are considering
launching CDMA networks. The European business community is lobbying Japan to allow carriers to select GSM even if the
government chooses CDMA.
