Alcatel to Offer Cabletron SmartSwitch ADSL Router as Part of Its Family of SPEED TOUCH Modems

BusinessWire, Tuesday, April 06, 1999 at 08:04

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1999--Cabletron and
Alcatel today announced an agreement under which Alcatel will include
the Cabletron ADSL SmartSwitch Router 250 in its portfolio. The
product will be marketed as Alcatel SPEED TOUCH(tm) Office, and is
positioned at the high end of Alcatel's SPEED TOUCH(tm) family of ADSL
products.
This agreement enhances Alcatel's position as a "complete
solution provider," offering complete solutions for both customer
premises and central office ADSL equipment for Incumbent Local
Exchange Carriers (ILECs), Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs)
and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around the world.
The Cabletron SmartSwitch Router 250 (SSR250), an Asymmetric
Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Discrete MultiTone (DMT) Router, was
developed by FlowPoint, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cabletron, with
years of experience in developing DSL solutions. The product is fully
interoperable with the Alcatel 1000 ASAM, the world's most deployed
DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM).
"Cabletron's router is a valuable addition to Alcatel's SPEED
TOUCH(tm) portfolio, making it the most comprehensive and
fully-featured range of next-generation modems available today.
Several customers are showing enormous interest in complete ADSL
solutions for the small office market," said Martin de Prycker,
president of the Internet Products Division in Alcatel. "Several major
service providers will be deploying ADSL services with routers and
DSLAMs aimed at business users by mid-1999. They chose Alcatel and
Cabletron because we can ensure full interoperability and superior
performance, and because Alcatel can act as a single-source supplier
for all the required CPE and central office equipment. This makes
purchasing equipment much simpler and helps reduce the overall cost of
doing business."
"We are pleased to work closely with Alcatel to help bring down
the barriers to deployment of ADSL technology," said Craig Benson,
chairman and CEO of Cabletron. "This agreement with Alcatel enables
business customers around the globe to benefit from broadband network
access using our leading remote access router technology."
"In 1998, FlowPoint shipped the first ADSL-DMT router based on
the Alcatel DynaMiTe(tm) chipset" said Chuck Waggoner, president of
FlowPoint. "Now, Alcatel will expand the market for FlowPoint remote
access routers into Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world." Alcatel
currently holds more than 35% of the worldwide ADSL market and over
50% in the US.

Alcatel SPEED TOUCH(tm) Office Router

The Alcatel SPEED TOUCH(tm) Office ADSL-DMT Router utilizes
Alcatel's DynaMiTe(tm) MTK-20131 modem chipset to provide high-speed
data rates up to 8Mbps downstream to the small office and 640Kbps
upstream over a single pair of copper lines. The router is designed
for high-speed remote access to the Internet and corporate resources.
It is targeted at small offices of large businesses or business
locations with up to 100 users where multiple workstations and workers
require simultaneous high-speed remote access to the Internet,
corporate resources, and interactive applications such as video
conferencing, streaming video, and distance learning.

Powerful Routing/Bridging Features

The Alcatel SPEED TOUCH(tm) Office Router includes a set of
high-performance routing and bridging features, providing
compatibility with the protocols most commonly used in the Internet
and corporate Intranets. This includes TCP/IP Routing supporting RIP
and RIP2, Novell IPX Routing, IEEE Bridging, SNMP Network Management,
and Security Features. Plug-and-play features designed to get users
connected quickly and reduce service costs include Dynamic IP Address
Assignment with a built-in DHCP Server. Cabletron's powerful
implementation of Network Address Translation (NAT) provides unmatched
flexibility for small offices, permitting reduced administrative
expense, while simultaneously allowing the router to assign private IP
addresses within the small office and permits multiple servers on the
LAN.

Optional Embedded Firewall and Virtual Private Network

Cabletron has recently added an optional Firewall and Virtual
Private Networking (VPN) software package to its family of remote
access routers. The VPN software includes L2TP Tunneling, 56-bit DES
Encryption, and Diffie-Hellman key exchange, a unique combination of
security features for ADSL routers. The VPN features of the Alcatel
SPEED TOUCH(tm) Office router can be used by a small business or
enterprise customer to save cost and expand business opportunities by
connecting over the Internet their business locations, remote workers,
and business partners.
