What are your thoughts on this DELL/Red Hat announcement today?

Announcements like this are a real long-term problem for Microsoft. I don't think they'd encourage anyone to do something like this. Sure, the trial affects things, but mainly because the box makers know that they are now free to make decisions that Microsoft might not like but wouldn't dare challenge.

I agree that Linux poses no near-term threat for the corporate desktop, but it is a challenge for NT server. NT is no longer the low-price solution for server farms since the Linux is cheaper and runs on lower-priced versions of the same machines used for NT. Linux market share is growing. NT's growth seems to have leveled (although it could be that customers are simply waiting for Win2K). Training isn't even an issue with servers since there are thousands of Unix-oids out there who are far more comfortable with Linux than being retrained for NT.
