I'm surprised no one has commented on this Axent story. There are two things happening. One,a breakdown in the Security software market. Two, a question about all sales of enterprise level software being delayed due to Y2K.

Axent joins Oracle Corp., PeopleSoft Inc. and other software
companies in saying that customers are delaying purchases, in
part to fix older computers that could malfunction at the turn of
the millennium. Axent predicts the slowdown will continue for
several quarters, resulting in break-even earnings for this year,
well below profit estimates of $1.04 a share.

Axent has dropped from a high of about 40 to 8 dollars. Recently, Network Associates started the fall in this group in what was seen to be a individual issue related to aggressive accounting procedures. Well, the whole group has been decimated.

Interesting thing is what exactly do these companies sell and is it an issue that should be Y2K related? Logically, the need for security never goes away and the case for buying VPN seems so strong.

Will these companies snap back? Or, is there a great problem happening at the enterprise level where companies are not willing to buy needed software for systems that may need to be replaced?

What other companies hold the same risk that we've seen for this sector?
