This is from The Blue LED FAQ / Bright LED Page, by Don Klipstein (Jr):

Nichia NSPW series white LEDs have an NSPB series chip combined with a phosphor to convert some of the blue light to green through red. I have personally seen the spectrum with my own diffraction grating and my own eyes - it is a high-color-rendering-index white. The spectrum runs low in violet, high in mid-blue, low in cyan, and medium from mid-green through mid-red, and drops off in the far red...

So, it looks like Nichia is already marketing a white light based on converting some of the light from blue LEDs by phosphors, like GE is talking about. Also, in post #190 on the Yahoo! EMKR thread, "Pull the Other One 99" states that Cree/Siemens and HP are also selling them.
