I've long believed that portal sites and their operators are going to lose a lot of their appeal when people start carefully observing web traffic patterns. A portal is a place you pass through, generally staying for as little time as possible. I suspect that advertisers and retailers will soon start looking more at how long an average user stays on a site, rather than how may users pass by the site - many for only seconds - in a day. Content sites - those who draw specifically targeted groups of users and hold their attention for extended periods - will draw a lot more revenue than portals.

Yahoo! gets a lot more daily hits than, say, SI. But where would you rather advertise investment-related services, or goods aimed to appeal to the relatively prosperous adult? How many of those gazillions of Yahoo! hits are potential buyers? How long do they actually stay on Yahoo!?
