To elaborate on why I suggested MSFT was mediocre, compared to QCOM:

Take a look at the recent investments made by Microsoft - a news network, which has very little, if any return on investment; a satellite communications network that requires more than twice as many satellites as Globalstar, and has much less probability of success; a library/archive program designed to make MSFT the ultimate data source for schools, etc. While some of these new ideas may succeed in the very, very long term, for the moment their return on investment will drag down the profits from systems and applications. And if the current antitrust trial goes to conclusion, without a settlement beforehand, MSFT may well have to pay compensatory costs to firms like Netscape. Taken together, these factors don't enhance one's view of the quality of management. Art
