O.H.:

On the subject of manpower replacing computers...

I was at a Silicon Valley party two months ago. Had a chat with a senior exec of a temporary service firm. They were already filling orders for January '00. Big insurance companies who just wanted semi-intelligent bodies to desk check reports coming out of their systems to make sure they passed the common sense test. He implied that the temp market was already getting oversaturated.

He also told me that Clinton was going to declare some sort of school holiday to get more workers. I say that in the category of 'unconfirmed rumor'. First we mobilize the Armed Forces, then we get to the high school and college kids.....
