Ron -

There is no reason that manpower cannot once again replace computer power, if need be in a pinch.

I have a (now retired) friend who was involved in a company that dealt with automating real time credit card verification proceedures. While he's never been overly generous with the detials, I do belive that catalog retailer LL Bean was an early beta site (we're talking at least 10 years ago).

When I first mentioned Y2K to this friend, (1) he instantly understood it's implications, and (2) he flatly stated that for systems like his, there simply is no manual backup. And there's no possibility.

When you order something via an 800 phone call, your credit card is being verified right then & there. Now I wonder what the volumes of credit card transactions are these days...

Granted for catalog retailers they can very probably just unplug their phones for a few days as the 1/1/00 (or whatever) line is crossed.

But my point is that for some types of systems there is no possibility of a manual backup... the volumes are simply too large & complex.
