YZ:

An old college classmate of mine visited Shanghai this winter. He told me the government is desparately trying to stimulate the consumer spending. Some college classmates who now works for foreign joint ventures are doing pretty good. But most people, especially those who are laid off are not so good. The big restaurants are full of customers (most using public money), but medium and small restaurants have plenty of empty seats. Whenever you go to a bar or restaurant, some pretty girls would ask you if you need any service. The government doesn't care about the prostitutes. Without them the consumer spending would be even less.
