Siemens Introduces White LED in TOPLED Surface-mount Package
New White LED Technology Finding Applications in Automotive, Display and Handheld Devices
CUPERTINO, Calif. - February 16, 1999 - Siemens Microelectronics, Inc., today announced the availability of a revolutionary white light-emitting diode (LED) available in a TOPLED surface-mount design (SMD). The first generation of this single-chip LED (part #LW T676) is now available from Siemens and delivers luminescence intensities of 20 mcd. Next generation parts will be available later this year that deliver improved light intensities from 60 - 80 mcd.
The new white LEDs are ideally suited for dashboards, backlighting, reading lamps, displays, switches, indicators, image scanning and photocopying, and even room illumination. The first generation of surface-mount LEDs are already in use in the Audi sports coupe TT. The white LEDs suit all energy-saving applications in extreme working conditions, where replacing incandescent lamps is difficult and expensive. As a result, white LEDs can replace conventional incandescent illumination in many applications, such as automotive and display, offering longer operational life with considerable cost savings.
Before Siemens developed these new SMD white LEDs, manufacturing white light-emitting diodes required the combination of red, green and blue LEDs. Siemens eliminated this problem by applying the same simple, cost-saving luminescence conversion principle used in neon lamps. By combining blue emitting diodes and luminescent dyes, a single LED could be made to give bright light emissions at altered wavelengths. The resulting mixture of colors is visible to the human eye as white light, and the simple circuit design avoids the need to control three different colors while assuring a stable color tone.
