Due to the total of six or seven machines I have in mind accessing,
I feel an external will be needed as there will be a hole in the face
of the box when I'm somewhere else.

You could put in an empty frame..I recall false fronts for some removable trays..do not remember which ones...

If you want to go external you are probable looking at setting up a SCSI option, You could get a small external SCSI drive holder. As noted you will need a SCSI card in each computer...and the cost will be higher and there will be considerably more bulk.

I know "absolutely nothing" about USB, but that function seems to be the coming thing.....you or anyone have any thoughts about it?

I would not want to try to configure USB on seven machines. I have the best luck when I disable it in the bios. It seems to be some kind of a resource hog. If you can free up resources by replacing several items with USB devices you may have some luck. You could free up two IRQs if you replaced keyboard and mouse. You are talking bucks here as most USB devices will cost you more than standard devices. IMO it is still too soon to move on this technology.

There may be some length of cable issues if you want to go IDE external.
