CONGRESSMAN SAYS SEABROOK PLANT NOT READY FOR Y2K

BOSTON (AP) — Last month, a Massachusetts congressman warned that all 103 of the nation's nuclear power plants should be inspected to avoid Y2K problems that could include blackouts, even meltdowns, if their backup generators didn't work.

In response to his warning, a spokesman for the Seabrook nuclear power plant in Seabrook, N.H., told The Associated Press the power plant's two backup diesel generators had never failed.

But on Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, D-Malden, released a daily event report from Seabrook saying one of the two backup generators may not have been working for 21 months.
